Tag Archives: Graduation

When I got admitted in North South University, BBA degree used to rule the job market. Almost all companies looked for the candidates with BBA degree. But Before I could complete my BBA, job market started to shift toward MBA degree. By the time I completed my graduation, job market totally moved to MBA holders. Now companies look for candidates with MBA holders. They want MBA holders even in the lower posts where graduation is not required.

In other countries MBA is treated as a professional degree like Chartered Accountant (CA), Chartered Management Accountants (CMA) or other degrees. In those countries, number of MBA holders are very few. But in Bangladesh MBA is not a professional degree anymore. It have become an academic course as there are plenty of people with MBA degree.  Because there are lots of MBA holder in the market, BBA holders are falling behind in the job market. Therefore almost all graduates thinks of getting a MBA degree.

Till yesterday, I used to think what new qualification companies might want in their job candidates as there are lots of MBA holders. Today morning I got my answer when I saw a circular. It’s for DBA from IBA. IBA is the first institution in Bangladesh to introduce DBA. DBA means Doctor of Business Administration. It is treated as Ph.D in business sector or business study. I know soon other top universities and then other universities will start offering DBA. And lots of people will run after DBA degree in order to differentiate in job market.

Then I started to think, how long people will study to get a good job? People in our country kept studying and getting new degrees with a dream to get a good job which will give them attractive salary and attractive position. But as this type people increase every day, options increases for the employers too. They want highly qualified candidates for low positions which might not need any qualification at all. As DBA have been introduced in Bangladesh, people will start running after this degree and soon companies will make it a requirement for entry-level jobs.

I was thinking how to avoid dependence on degrees to make a livelihood. The answer I came up with was to avoid the tendency of getting a job. There will always be some new degrees. And people will run after those degrees to differentiate in the job market and get a good job. But if we don’t have any tendency to run after job, we wouldn’t have to take the hassle to achieve those higher degrees. Instead of running after jobs, people should start small businesses. They should become a small entrepreneur. If people don’t want to lead posh lifestyle, small business might be enough to make livelihood and maintain an average lifestyle. The amount of time and money people spends for getting degrees, a person might had a successful business  if those are spent for small business. If people trend to start small business, this country will have lots of small entrepreneurs and who knows, they might become giant entrepreneurs someday.

If you are a university student, what do you think your relationship status will be at the end of the university life? If you already graduated from university, what was your relationship status for that time frame? I made a theory that assumes there could be 18 types of relationship status during your university life. See if you can find yours among these 18 types. But before going to details let me explain how my theory works.

Suppose the time you are/were a student of university is a blue lined box. And mark yourself as red arrow while you are going /went through that blue lined box. Also put a different color arrow(s) for your partner(s) in that box depending on the relationship status. PUFF!! you get your relationship diagram. And now I think I should tell you the underlying assumptions of my theory.

Assumption 1: You are/were not married while you are/were student of university.
Assumption 2:
you dated only one partner at a time.
Assumption 3: you didn’t dated your university teacher.

If you don’t fulfill the requirement of the assumptions, you will not find  your relationship diagram in 18 diagrams given below. And now let me explain the 18 cases for you so that you can find your diagram.

If you face any problem understanding the diagrams, please see the explanation below.

Case 1: You were/are single throughout the university life.

Case 2: You entered with your partner and remained with him/her and you both graduate together.

Case 3: You got admitted in one university and your partner got in another. But you two remained together and finished your university life together.

Case 4: You admitted with your partner but in the middle you guys broke up. And you remained single for rest of the university life.

Case 5: You were single when you got admitted but you got your partner during your university time and graduate with him/her.

Case 6: You and your partner got admitted in different university and in the middle of university life you broke up. Rest of the university life you stay single.

Case 7: You were single when you got admitted. But at the first semester you got your girl friend. you remained with him/her through out the university period but broke up at the time of graduation.

Case 8: You and your partner entered in the university together and broke up at some point. Then you get a new partner and graduate with him/her.

Case 9: You were single at the beginning. then you met someone outside of your university and fall in love. You continue the relation even after your graduation.

Case 10: You get admitted and graduate as single but throughout the university life you EXPLORED and continuously changed your partner.

Case 11: You begin as single but then you changed your partner several times. Before you graduate you finally find THE ONE for you and graduate with him/her.

Case 12: You entered with one partner but due to study pressure or some other reason you couldn’t give time to each other and eventually broke up. Later you got a new partner from outside of the university and continue the relation.

Case 13: You were single for the whole university period except for one or two semester.

Case 14: You and your partner got admitted in different university and broke up in the middle. then you get new partner from your university and graduate.

Case 15: You enter and exit as single but in the middle you had a relation for one or two years.

Case 16: Together you and your partner got admitted in university. At some point of university life you guys get married and when you graduate, you may already have kid(s).

Case 17: You were single at the beginning. Then your parents forced you (or in your own wish) to get married with someone from your university. And you might have kid(s) by the time you graduate.

Case 18: Same as previous one. Your parents forced you (or in your own wish) to get married with someone outside of university. And you might have kid(s) by the time you graduate.

I assume by this time you have found your relationship frame. Now match which case are you from the following 18 possible types of relation format in university time frame.

I heard about “Battle of minds” in my very first semester in North South University. In that period I didn’t have slightest idea about it. But later I came to know more about it. “Battle of minds” is a competition for the graduating and fresh graduate students. It is organized by ‘British American Tobacco Bangladesh – BATB’. This competition is a process of recruiting fresh graduates and interns for BATB. So I was thinking to participate in BOM ever since. At the end of last month, I learned that registration for BOM has started and one of our faculty member have asked, NSUers those who have completed 80 credits and CGPA above 3, to drop CV to him.

I the opportunity to apply for it. But I didn’t want to apply alone. So I looked for a group. And the people I first thought of are my nerd friends: Mobashra Ather, Anwar Zaman, Sazid Raihan, Tihan Adnan. I asked them to join with me. Zaman wasn’t interested but others were. But later Sazid and Tihan planned to apply next year. So Mobashra & I dropped our CV. And few days later we got the invitation for grooming session.

Even though Mobashra got invitation, she didn’t want to join in the grooming session. I kept insisting and requesting her to join in.  In our Nerd Club, Sazid and Zaman also suggested her to join in. After a long discussion she agreed.

So today was our grooming session. Mobashra reached NSU before me and gave a bad news that participants of grooming session have been divided into several groups and assigned in different class rooms. I was little bit hurt when I found out that we two are assigned in separate rooms.

Session in Mobashra’s room started first. Galib sir conducted the session. Few minutes later he came to our room. Muneem Sir was with him. Galib sir explained why we were separated from others. he said we had either CGPA less than 3 or we didn’t complete 96 credit till summer ’10. Then he told us that BOM is for those who are in their last semester or 2nd last semester or graduated in last 3 months. None of us in my room met that criteria and so we can’t go to the next step. Then he explained why he asked students with 80 credits to apply. According to him, those who have applied have interest for BOM. And he wanted they to give some exposure to BOM, so that, we can prepare for next year Battle of Minds. In short, we were called to get some experience of BOM. I didn’t feel bad because I was enjoying it because I was getting the experience I wanted. On other hand, Mobashra had finished more that 96 credit and in her 2nd last semester. So she did qualify for this year BOM. .

In Both room, we were asked to form a small group of our own. Then all groups were given a case on Yahoo! ans asked to solve it with in two hours. We were asked to make a power point presentation which have to present after two hours.

People I knew from my room were Marufa, Kollol, Fayeed,  Rahim. I formed a group with Fayeed, Sifat and Rubaiyat. We passed next two hours reading the 23 page case, answering the questions asked at the end of case, discussing and making PowerPoint slides. I don’t know what Mobashra did in that time. But the two-time I went out of my room and peeped into her room, I found she is reading and working hard.

So after two hours we all reported to NAC507 for the presentation. There Mehedi sir and Bashir sir joined us. Galib sir gave use few instruction about BOM, online registration of BOM, roadshow and few other things. Then he asked all of us to go outside and wait for calls to present. And as Mobashra and people of her room are participating this year BOM, they were given priority to present. Fortunate for Mobashra that her group was called first to present. I know Mobashra hates presentation but looks like she did it well.  But still she was little (!) bit angry with me as I ruined her holiday.

I waited till 5 pm for my turn to present. but groups from other room weren’t done. In the mean time, I missed my make up class, a quiz and a class journal. So me and my group members decided to forfeit. As weren’t going this year BOM, there is no point of being tired and sacrificing energy. Though all of us really wanted to present, but can’t wait any further. So we left NSU. And later I came to know that some other teams have forfeited too.

On my way back, I figured that I had to sacrifice my classes for the grooming session. That was a small sacrifice but it won’t be small when I’ll participate in BOM. I’ll try for BOM next year only if  I find I’ve noting to sacrifice. I’ve sacrificed enough of my study for my clubs in NSU. I am not ready to sacrifice anymore at this stage. I found that I don’t have interest on BOM anymore. This is exactly how Mobashra felt earlier but I insisted her to participate. I apologize to Mobashra for insisting and making her to participate. Though I know she liked the grooming session and will do better if she participate in BOM. I’m done with my “Battle of Minds” adventure but I’m requesting Mobashra to apply for BOM. Hope she will consider It.
